The Radical Middle with Dr. Ryun Chang

Fall 2023

Introduction

The Need for the Radical Middle Paradigm (Part 1)

There are two problems that necessitate the emergence of the Radical Middle paradigm. The first session probes into the problem of the way our theologians typically theologize through the lens of either/or, which often produces division and conflicts.  We will need to do a whole lot better as the significance of public theology—the articulation of Christian thoughts regarding issues affecting the public—has increased in the post-COVID ministry.

The Need for the Radical Middle Paradigm (Part 2)

The second session probes into the problem of the way biblical truth or revelation is framed in Scripture. Structured as antinomic or antithetical propositions, two opposing scriptures are presented as equally valid and true. The way we typically handle these antithetical propositions really injure the way we ought to understand Scripture. Thus, this is another reason for the necessity of the Radical Middle paradigm.

What is the Radical Middle Paradigm?

It is very consequential to discern to which biblical revelation the Radical Middle paradigm of both/and should be applied or should not applied. A mistake made here could corrupt the truth, thereby producing heretical or deleterious beliefs. Many examples, both biblical and contemporary, are discussed.

Interpreting Antithetical Scriptures According to the Hermeneutics of the Radical Middle

In this final session, I demonstrate, first, how to interpret antithetical revelations in accordance with the Radical Middle paradigm, and second, how this paradigm can also be applied to several branches of systematic theology as well as any issues, theological or sociocultural, where either/or approach should not be applied. A segment is dedicated to explaining what it means to pursue Word and Spirit in the Radical Middle.
